Quarterly Focus: Corrosion Prevention and Vehicle Maintenance

02/01/2018

Products of the Month:

STA-DRY® Sockets, Plug, and Plug Accessories

The 7-way electrical connection is a primary focus in our industry because it is highly susceptible to damage from corrosion. The standard J560 7-way plug and socket interchange will always experience a certain amount of contamination leaking into the connection. While cleaning and greasing the connections during regular routine preventative maintenance can help keep corrosion at bay, moving away from standard zinc die-cast housing style connectors to 7-way connectors from our line of STA-DRY® products adds additional protection. Continuing with a focus on corrosion prevention and vehicle maintenance, this month’s featured products are STA-DRY® 7-way sockets and the WEATHER-TITE™ PERMAPLUG™. And because it’s important to maintain all electrical connections, we’ve included plug inserts for 7-way, ISO, and 6-way electrical connections as well.

STA-DRY® Sockets

With non-corrosive housing, and a sealed inner cavity to prevent contaminates from passing through to the wire harness, Phillips STA-DRY® sockets were designed specifically to combat against corrosion. They are available with wire insertion, ring terminal, and bulleted terminations. The STA-DRY® QCS® and QCS2® harnesses, created for easy socket connection and disconnection, combines a 7-way front main harness piece with an over-molded boot design, and a STA-DRY® bulleted socket that connects with the boot. With the ability to “plug-in” or “unplug” the socket to and from the boot, rather than having to wire it up to the 7-way cable, socket replacement time is significantly reduced, lowering maintenance cost.

WEATHER-TITE™ PERMAPLUG™

The WEATHER-TITE™ PERMAPLUG™ boasts a non-corrosive plug housing that is unbreakable, and a 360⁰ ratcheting compression cable clamp at the back of the plug offering additional weather-proofing protection. However, the biggest selling feature of this plug is the WEATHER-TITE™ seal. Quickly and easily replaced during routine maintenance, it is a thick rubberized ring with three individual wiper rings, positioned at the front of the plug. The seal is designed to block moisture and contaminants that may have made their way inside the socket from proceeding any further towards entering the electrical system at the coupled connection.

Plug Inserts

Phillips offers plug inserts for 6-way, ISO, and 7-way plugs, including our WEATHER-TITE™ PERMAPLUG™ and QCP™ (Quick-Change Plug). All 7-way plug inserts feature floating brass pins to allow for secure installation in misaligned sockets. All standard plug inserts offer wire insertion terminations with thread sealed screws to prevent wire pull-out. The QCP™ Cartridge is a “plug-in” type of replacement insert offered for QCP™ assemblies only.
